Leona Mae Alvino went to be with the Lord Tuesday July 9, 2013, at Kindred Hospital, Havertown, Pa.
Mrs. Alvino was born Aug. 20, 1937, in Cheswold to the late Robert James Carney and Ethel L. Sammons. She had attended Fork Branch School in Cheswold and was a Native American from the Lenni Lenape Tribe. Along with her husband, she was a member of the Lady of Mercy Church of Long Island, N.Y. Mrs. Alvino was a loving wife and mother, who raised her grandson as her own. She loved putting together 1,000 piece puzzles, have them framed and decorated her house with them. She also liked doing crossword puzzles, collecting porcelain dolls and collecting stuffed teddy bears. She enjoyed cooking large meals for her family, listening to music and dancing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Lenni Winters Street; sisters, Loretta Draine of Virginia, Frances Minner of Dover and Emma Seeney of Dover; brothers, Clarence Carney of Milford, and Donald Carney of Dover. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Vincent Alvino of Seaford; daughter, Mia Dawn Alvino-Streett and her husband William Patrick Streett of Dover; grandchildren, Javarr A. Streett and Sabrina C. Gillis; great-grandchildren, Marquis Gillis and Zayden Nunez-Gillis; siblings, Agnes Durham of Greenwich, N.J., Harriett Street of Georgetown, Janet Scotten of Dover, Melvin Carney of Watuga, Texas, Larry, Isaac, and Roland Carney all of Dover, Ronald Carney of Cheswold; and host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Monday, July 15, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 422 S. Governor's Ave., Dover, DE 19904.
