Eugene 'Gene' Hazzard, electrical contractor

Eugene “Gene” R. Hazzard, 80, of Pinewater Farm, passed away peacefully at his residence Sunday, July 14, 2013, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Lewes, Nov. 1, 1932, son of the late Harry Palmer and Nellie (Burton) Hazzard.

Gene honorably served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard where he spent time stationed on an ice breaker in Greenland. He went on to own and operate Hazzard Electrical Contractors in Sussex County for many years, a tradition which is being carried on by his family.

Gene was a devoted member of the Groome United Methodist Church. He was a 32nd degree mason with the Jefferson Lodge of Lewes for 57 years, member of the Consistory, 60-year member of American Legion Post 17, Lewes, and a founding member of the Sussex County Electrical Contractors Association.

In his spare time he was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed working with Boy Scouts. Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and dear friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hazzard was preceded in death by his first wife, Joy (Dobbs) Hazzard in 1982; his son, Stephen Hazzard in 2002; and his granddaughter, Sarah Hazzard in 2013.

He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Rose B. Hazzard; his brother: Herbert M. Hazzard of Winter Park, Fla.; his sister, Irene Hazzard of Lewes; his two sons: Eugene R. Hazzard Jr. of Ocean View and David H. Hazzard of Angola; his eight grandchildren: John, Paul, Wilson, Joshua, Joycelyn, Jennifer, Jessica, and Katherine; and his four great-grandchildren: Kolton, Lily, Raylon, Bennett.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 19, at 11 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Friends may also call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 18, with a Masonic Service to be held at 7:30 p.m. Interment will immediately follow funeral services at Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Groome United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 299, Lewes, DE 19958, or to Gideon’s International, Sussex County  East Gideons c/O Howard Millman, PO BOX 155, Lewes, DE 19958.

Gene and his family would like to extend a special thanks to the hospice nurses for the excellent care and guidance they shared. They would also like to extend a special thanks to Gene’s private nurses, Theresa Johnson, Bobbie Jo Kemp, Sabrina Johnson, Barbara Snead and Therese McCallion for their compassion and dedication to Gene throughout his illness. May God bless them for their patience and kindness.
