Alleged home invasion victim arrested for fabricating story

July 18, 2013

A 25-year-old Long Neck woman who claimed two men robbed and assaulted her was arrested July 18 for fabricating the story, Delaware State Police said.

Police charged Lauren L. Wingate with providing false information to a law enforcement officer after she confessed to the crime during a follow-up interview.

Wingate claimed two men entered her home on the 25000 block of Lingo Drive July 16 and demanded money. When she did not comply, she said, the men struck her in the face and stole a handgun before fleeing.

Police said Wingate allowed two acquaintances to enter her home where she gave them her father's pain medication for repayment of a drug debt. She then hid the handgun in a bush to make the incident look like a robbery so her father would not find out she was responsible for removing the drugs.

Wingate was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of a $2,000 secured bond.
