True crime writer Anthony M. DeStefano to appear Aug. 3 at Browseabout

July 28, 2013

New York City true crime author Anthony M. DeStefano will appear from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach for a book signing and discussion about his latest publication, “Vinny Gorgeous: the Ugly Rise and Fall of A New York Mobster,” published by Lyons Press.

DeStefano's latest book involves the sensational betrayal of  mobster Vincent "Vinny Gorgeous" Basciano by his former Bonanno crime family boss, Joe Massino. As a result of Massino's unprecedented cooperation with the FBI, the first time an official Mafia boss in New York ever took such action, Basciano was convicted of racketeering murder and sentenced to life in prison at the supermax facility in Colorado. The story made headlines when Massino was freed of his own life sentence because of his cooperation against Basciano.

The author of two other true crime specials,  "King of The Godfathers" and "Mob Killer," DeStefano is a reporter specializing in legal affairs and criminal justice for Newsday. He was part of a team of reporters who in 1992 won the Pulitzer Prize for spot news coverage related to the Union Square subway crash in Manhattan. He can be reached on Facebook and at tonydestefano.com.
