Elizabeth 'Betty' Small, devout Catholic

Elizabeth T. (Betty) Small, 87, of Newark, died peacefully Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in Lewes.

Betty was born and raised in the Happy Valley neighborhood in the City of Wilmington in 1926, daughter of the late Alfred and Leona Herman.

A graduate of Wilmington High School, Betty went on to a career as a supervisor receptionist for the Delaware Department of Labor until becoming a full-time homemaker in 1957. Betty was a devout Catholic and member of the Holy Family Church in Newark. A bold, independent spirit, her family was first in her heart.

Betty was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, C. W. Small Jr. (Bill). She is survived by her loving children Joseph Flinn and family of Smyrna; Claudia Roark (Ron) of Lewes; Michael Small of Hockessin and Susan Ann Small Chaplin RN, of New Castle. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Joe Jr., Colleen, Shannon, Matthew, Adam, Tyler and Andrew as well as her great-grandchildren and stepgrandchildren.

A committal service will be held Tuesday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Betty will always be remembered for her generous nature and support of Christiana Fire Company, Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary, Delaware State Police (Delaware State Police Museum), and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital . In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any of these organizations.
