Cape Junior League All-Stars fall to Naamans 7-4 to end championship run

July 29, 2013

The District 3 Champion Cape Junior League team finished its season July 27 with a 7-4 loss to a scrappy Naamans team in the Delaware three-district state tournament at Middletown.

The Cape team was battling back from the bottom bracket after losing to Naamans 8-4 July 25. Naamans lost to MOT (Middletown, Odessa, Townsend) on July 26 to set up the rematch with Cape. Naamans now plays MOT for the right to go to the regional championships in New Jersey.

"We played great offense in the game," said manager Bill Lux. "We out hit Naamans 11-7, but we made six errors and didn't play great defense."

Kyle Lux went 3-for-4 on the evening while Ryan Meade and Connor Thompson both went 2-3 with Thompson slugging a double.  Zack Gelof had a 2-for-4 game.  Meade, Thompson, Gelof and David Erickson each had an RBI for Cape.

"We played really well in the District III Championships," said Cape coach Rich Carey. "We just came up a little short in the state tournament. This is a great bunch of kids, and they will be there again next season."
