July 31, 2013

Roy E. Love, 79, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013, after being struck by a vehicle.  He was born Dec. 13, 1933, in Montreal, Quebec, son of the late Edward Love and Alice (Bamber) Love.

Mr. Love was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  He graduated from McGill University and received a Ph.D. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  He retired from a 33-year career as a scientist and executive at Corning Glass Works (now Corning Inc.) in 1998.  Mr. Love received several patents and played a significant role developing Corning’s fiber optics business from its inception in the 1970s until his retirement.

Mr. Love was a long-time member of the American Physical Society and continued his interest in physics and science into retirement, fascinated by the study of consciousness and special relativity. He loved his cigars, a bottle of wine with good friends, and body-surfing the waves of Rehoboth. Many who knew Roy will remember his passion for spirited conversation, his tireless devotion to his wife and family, his generosity to all, and his love of life.

Mr. Love is survived by his loving wife, Helene “Blanche” (Micas) Love; daughter Christina of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons: Geoffrey Love and his wife Denice of Monticello, Ill. and Paul Love and his wife Trudy of San Diego, Calif.; and five grandchildren: Kate, Erin, Amy, Julianna, and Dylan Love.  Blanche was also struck by the car and was airlifted to Christiana Hospital in Newark. She was discharged July 23, and is now rehabilitating at Cadbury Health Center in Lewes.

A graveside ceremony will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, at 12:30 p.m., at Epworth Cemetery, Henlopen Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, followed by a reception in honor and celebration of Mr. Love’s life at 2 p.m., at Big Fish Grill Restaurant, 20298 Coastal Hwy. Rehoboth Beach.
