Irishman Emmet Jennings wins Northbeach 5K in 16:04

Emmet Jennings, 21, an Irishman working in Ocean City for the summer, found his way to Dewey Beach July 27 for the Northbeach Bar and Grill 5K. Jennings was gone on the whistle, the fastest an Irishman ever ran away from a bar, but he also returned in 16:04 to take first-place honors in front of 350 hoofers who were chasing him.

Tom Parlapiano, 16:40; Enos Benbow ,16:49; Brian Shepherd, 17:39; and Jeff Young, 17:40 rounded out the top five.

The women’s top five were Tara Cavaselis, 19:35; Sarah McShane, 19:46; Stacey Esposito 21:18; Caitlin Murphy, 22:06; and Katrina Seibert, 22:34.

“This is the absolute best running community I’ve ever visited,” said Brian Shepard, 47, a high school principal from Ligonier, Ind. “We don’t have anything in Indiana like this. “

Some notable local performances included Jacki Coveleski, 19, 23:19; Chris Czerwinski, 13, 23:30; and Ike Driskill, 23, 24:10.
