Cecily Connell is OK, legislator says
August 5, 2013

Dewey Beach Police say they have found a woman who went missing in the early morning hours of Aug. 4. Cecily V. Connell, 25, was found – unharmed – in the Pot Nets community, Aug. 5, a state legislator says.

“She has been interviewed by an investigator of the Dewey Beach Police Department, and she has been in contact with her family,” Sgt. Cliff Dempsey said in a press release.

Connell, a Newark resident, went missing after attending a wedding, Aug. 3.  She and others who attended the wedding later went to Bottle and Cork in Dewey Beach to celebrate.

Before she was located, Connell was last seen by her friends after midnight in Bottle and Cork, wearing a neon blue wig and a blue and white marble print dress.

Rep. Mike Ramone, R-Middle Run Valley, organized a search party to assist police in locating Connell. She is an employee at Delaware Swim and Fitness Center in Wilmington, which is owned by Ramone.

“Her family reported to me just a little while ago that they talked to Cecily, and that she is OK. She was located in the Pot-Nets area,” Ramone said in an Aug. 5 statement. “Police continue to investigate the details of exactly what happened.”

The legislator also thanked those who joined the search party earlier that day.  “To the many local businesses, friends and extended family of the Delaware Swim and Fitness Center, I cannot thank you enough for the support you offered in this time of need. We are so grateful that Cecily has been found and is doing well,” he said.

About 50 people, including friends and family members of Connell, met at Dewey Beach Lions Club, Aug. 5, to aid the search. Delaware State Police helicopters did an aerial search of the town, Dempsey said.

Property owner Judith Mazur said Connell had attended her son’s wedding Aug. 3.  After the wedding, people gathered at Mazur’s house on Clayton Street, she said.  Mazur said a group of people – including Connell – left her house around midnight to attend a jam session at Bottle and Cork.

Mazur said she last saw Connell inside Bottle and Cork at 12:15 a.m., Aug. 4.

Others in the search party said Connell was seen alone, leaving Bottle and Cork; some said she was seen leaving Ivy with an unidentified man and others saw her walking on McKinley Avenue, near Best Western, where some visitors who also attended the wedding were staying.  All reports said she was wearing the blue wig.
