Pedestrian killed on Route 13 near Laurel

August 5, 2013

A man walking along Route 13 was killed Aug. 4 when police say he crossed into the path of a pick-up truck and was hit.

The man, only described as Hispanic and in his late 20s, was walking Route 13 north of Sycamore Road near Laurel at 11:15 p.m. when he crossed the highway from west to east, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

The victim had crossed the southbound lanes of Route 13, and had stepped into the right lane of the northbound lanes when he was struck by a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado driven by John S. Wilson, 22, of Laurel, Fournier said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilson stopped his truck on the northbound shoulder of the road; he and a 21-year-old passenger were properly restrained and not injured, Fournier said.

U.S. 13 north of Sycamore Road was closed for about three hours.
