Starboard hosts annual fireman's benefit

August 24, 2013

The annual fireman’s benefit took place at the Starboard Restaurant  Aug.11. For 11 years Washington, D.C. firemen have gathered in Dewey Beach to raise funds to benefit the foundation. A group of more than 30 hardworking fire fighters from New York City, D.C., Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Prince Georges County and Montgomery County served as guest bartenders for a worthy cause - the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation.

They raised approximately $7,000 through a 50/50 raffle, a date auction, T-shirt sales, tips and donations. The money raised will go to the foundation which works to ensure that D.C. Metro area firefighters who are injured in the line of duty receive impeccable care. It also helps support research, equipment, and care of the families, as well as the injured.

With active fires burning throughout the United States, firemen have been thrust, once again, into the public’s foremost thoughts. Many area firefighters, as well as those from other states, travel to help fight fires in other states when the need arises as well as answering emergency calls in their own immediate areas. The fireman’s benefit at the Starboard was the perfect way to raise awareness and money while having a great time.

Steve “Monty” Montgomery, owner of the Starboard, always embraces the chance to host charitable events. He enjoys giving back to the community, but he also feels an added responsibility to give back to those who serve such as police forces, and firemen, as at Sunday’s benefit. “It was a great time,” says Montgomery, “and we are so happy to offer a place for the event. We’re thankful for all the firemen do, and this is just a small way to be able to give back.”
