“Life in the bike lane - don’t it make you lose your mind?”

The Highway One 5K and 10K held Aug. 10 featured runners going in both directions interspersed with the weekly Tour de Dewey bikers on their way to Bethany Beach and points south interspersed with cross walkers, jay walkers, big-headed dogs barking from car windows - it was just a flat-out wild world from cone to cone.

A pack of 227 runners elected the one-loop 5K race, which was won by Evan Sandt, 43, from Conestoga, Pa., in a time of 17:20. The rest of the leaderboard was Aidan McDermott, 18:41; Connor McNamara, 19:17; Todd Buchanan, 19:45; and Jeremy Rapposelli, 19:58.

The top women in the 5K were Wendy Kimmel, 45, from Lancaster, Pa., 20:25; Kirsten Walsh, 22:56; Julie Hamilton, 23:15; Kim Geyer, 23:24; and Denise D’Antuono, 23:53.

The 155 10K runners ran a block past the Rudder right to home then headed back out on the course for another 5K. A 10K and a 10-mile race are requirements to complete the 10 Sisters series.

Brett Long, 30, from Rochester, N.Y., was the 10K winner in 36:12, followed by John Stolzfus, 39:56, and Bobby Hutton, 41:44. Tara Cavaselis, the first woman and fourth overall, ran 41:44, followed by Josey Rupert, 42:05; Brian Sullivan, 42:41; Troy Seltzinger, 43:08; Chris Stanley, 43:19; Jen Cawthern, 43:53; and Lauren Bearmarth, 44:07.

Scores of recreational 5K runners got lapped by the serious10K runners, but it was all good as everyone returned to the post-race Rudder deck party unblemished and unscathed.

A large group from the Delaware Chapter of Black Girls Run elected the 5K or 10K, and a bridal party wearing Last Fling T-shirts also joined the run and the party.
