August 22, 2013

Beebe Medical Foundation will again highlight its focus on heart and vascular health Sunday, Sept. 8, by hosting the Fourth Annual Treat the Beat 5K Walk to support Cardiac and Vascular Services at Beebe Medical Center.

The free event will take place at George H. P. Smith Park at Blockhouse Pond, adjacent to Beebe Medical Center’s main campus in Lewes. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the walk starting at 9 a.m. Beebe Medical Center’s Population Health nurses will be on site to check blood pressure; healthy snacks will be available. Mid-Atlantic Family Practice is returning as title sponsor for the fourth year in a row. Jeffrey Heckert, MD, FAAFP, CEO of Mid-Atlantic Family Practice, is this year’s honorary chair. In fall 2012, Heckert underwent life-saving heart surgery at Beebe Medical Center and credits the wonderful staff and surgeons for his recovery.

The walk is free, but all participants must register and are encouraged to raise money. Walkers who register by Aug. 30 will get a T-shirt. This year’s top individual fundraiser will receive dinner for two at Striper Bites in Lewes, and the top fundraising team will receive sport arm bands for an iPhone/iPod Touch.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women across the nation. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. This happens over time and is the major cause of heart attacks.

Beebe Medical Center’s Cardiac and Vascular Services provide comprehensive care for patients with diseases of the heart and arteries. Services include cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, cardiac rhythm management, electrophysiology services, cardiac and vascular diagnostic testing, and cardiac rehabilitation services.

Healthgrades ranked Beebe Medical Center No. 1 in Delmarva for Vascular Surgery in 2013, and gave it a 5-star rating for Carotid Surgery in 2013. Healthgrades also ranked Beebe Medical Center No. 1 in Delaware for Cardiology Services in 2013.
