I wanted to comment on Mr. Jeff Smith's recent comments on Route 1 and its unfortunate pedestrian and driver mishaps. I don't know Jeff, but he hit it right on the head. You can throw all the resources and money at this problem and we will still have people who will do everything they can to jeopardize their life and the lives of others. It's hard to feel sorry for stupidity, but easy to feel for the collateral damage they cause.
If you read Jeff's article he listed quite a few ways people put their lives and lives of others in danger. The only solution for them is to hold them as highly accountable as the law will allow. I don't feel any sympathy for the stupid people, but to the ones with common sense who are trying to do the right thing I would like to offer this.
I recently watched an overhead bridge erected in Lynchburg, Va. that allowed mainly college students to access both sides of a very busy road and high enough for tall vehicles to pass under. The construction is basically steel beams that span the road anchored in on both sides with steps. The cost appears minimal. The seaside/bayside outlet could use one. The other obvious area in need is the outlet at Midway. If this bridge was built most people would use it rather then risk life. For the rest of them, well to quote Jeff, there is no solution for stupid.
In closing, even with all our problems we have in this town, it's undoubtedly the best place in the world to live. People come this resort area with their kids and there is laughter and smiles everywhere you look. Our crime is relatively low and people are friendly. We can do nothing about the stupid people, but lets try to protect the rest of the people who come here spending money and are willing to walk a few hundred feet to a bridge that spans both sides of the highway. If you build it they will come.
