Matilda C. Evans, grocery store operator

Matilda C. Evans of Georgetown died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at the Harrison House in Georgetown. She was born in Whiteleysburg, Md. on May 23, 1915, to the late Harry and Alvertie Hickman Welch.

Mrs. Evans owned and operated grocery stores in Delaware City and Rehoboth. Upon returning to Greensboro, Md., she worked for the Greensboro Grocery, which later became Jackson Mart, retiring after 17 years of service.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Evans Sr.; son Nelson Evans Jr.; brother, Raymond Welch Sr.; sisters, Pauline Steward and Myrtle Welch; and niece, G. Ann Farrow. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Dolores Evans and Clara Todd both of Dover, Raymond Welch Jr. of St. Augustine, Fla., William Biddle Sr. of Dover, Warren Welch of Harrington, David Cooper of Centreville, Md., and Donald Cooper of Hickory, N.C.; sister-in-law, Betty Powell of Silver Spring, Md.; and many great-nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Evans' funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20,  at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home in Greensboro, Md. where family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Greensboro Cemetery.
