The Cape soccer team continues to improve during this preseason, according to third-year head coach Gary Montalto.

Montalto has led Cape to a two-year overall record of 22-5-3 and two straight state tournament appearances.

“We only lost four starters, and we have some excellent skill players and we’re good on defense," Montalto said. "We’ve only given up one goal in the preseason, and that came in the last minute of a 90-minute scrimmage against Queen Anne’s."

"We return experienced players Max Euler, Miguel Marino, Billy Swontek, Elliot Young, Kai Vitella, Josh Lesher and Griffin Kammerer," said Montalto. "We also return key role players in Drew Mulcahy, Conor Donohoe and Zach Swarbrick."

Cape battled the boot scooters from Centerville, Md., a state finalist last spring, through three periods and 30 minutes and pretty much dominated field position and time of possession.

Euler came free down the middle and didn’t miss, scoring like he was supposed to as Cape went up 1-0 and stayed in command throughout the entire scrimmage.

The varsity roster for Cape includes 10th-graders Jack Ashby, Joao Ferreira, Tyler Maloy, Drew Mulcahy and Michael Thomas.

Juniors are Nestor Bermudez, Tobin Fleming, Mason Jones, Dan Lewis, Jackie Norwood, Jose Santana, Zach Swarbrick, Kai Vitella and Sam Young.

The strength of the team will be the depth and experience of the senior class, which includes Donohoe, Euler, Abdias Giraldi, Kammerer, Lesher, Joe McMillon, Miguel Marino-Sanchez, Swontek and Elliot Young.

Scott Myers is the varsity assistant coach while John Myers takes over as coach of the junior varsity.

The junior varsity roster includes Anthony Arias, Harold Ayala, Jacob Brown, Richard Carey, Seth Caswell, Douglas Bermudez, Noah Clifton, Sam Evans, Tobin Fleming, Jason Garcia, William Geppert, Ambrose Hochrein, Brent Hochrein, Mason Jones, Pablo Lazaro, Jonathan Martinez, Steven Matalavage, Patrick Monigle, Tyler Nichols and Josh Willis.

The Vikings have a scrimmage play day at Polytech Friday, Aug. 30, before opening the season at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, versus Tower Hill at Dover High School.

Cape will play at home Tuesday, Sept. 10, versus Tatnall and Thursday, Sept. 12, versus Milford.
