Lake Forest Invitational a festival of running

Beebe gets the message out on cardiac health
September 6, 2013
Treat the Beat 5K Walk

My late brother John, a former 4:09 miler, ran against the great Alberto Salazar while racing for Watertown High School. John also trained in high school with the BAA organization, doing track workouts in downtown Boston with Bill Rogers and Greg Meyer. John was also teammates at Eastern New Mexico with the great Kenyan miler, Mike Boit. John led the college ranks in the indoor 1,000 meters in the early '80s with a 2:19 performance.

In May 2002, John went to sleep at age 42 and didn’t wake up. He died of a heart attack.

Beebe Medical Foundation will again highlight its focus on heart and vascular health by hosting the Sept. 8 Fourth Annual Treat the Beat 5K Walk to support Cardiac and Vascular Services at Beebe Medical Center. The free event will take place at George H. P. Smith Park at Blockhouse Pond, adjacent to Beebe Medical Center’s main campus in Lewes. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the walk starting at 9 a.m. Beebe Medical Center’s Population Health nurses will be on site to check blood pressures. Healthy snacks will be available.

Mid Atlantic Family Practice is returning as title sponsor for the fourth year in a row. Jeffrey Heckert, MD, FAAFP, CEO of Mid-Atlantic Family Practice, is this year’s honorary chair. In fall 2012, Dr. Heckert underwent life-saving heart surgery at Beebe Medical Center and credits the wonderful staff and surgeons for his recovery.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women across the nation. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries which supply blood to the heart. This happens over time and is the major cause of heart attacks.

Beebe Medical Center’s Cardiac and Vascular Services provide comprehensive care for patients with diseases of the heart and arteries. Services include cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, cardiac rhythm management, electrophysiology services, cardiac and vascular diagnostic testing, and cardiac rehabilitation services.

To register for the Treat the Beat event, visit www.beebefoundation.org or call the foundation at 302-644-2900.
