Unitarian Universalists to host Delmarva Celebration Oct. 13

Eight congregations to gather in Lewes
September 22, 2013

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will host the Third Annual Delmarva Unitarian Universalist Celebration at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, at Cape Henlopen High School, 1250 Kings Highway, Lewes.

The celebration is a gathering of the eight congregations on the Delmarva Peninsula: UU of Central Delaware, UU Fellowship of Newark, UU of the Chester River, First Unitarian-Wilmington, UU Society of Mill Creek, UU Fellowship at Easton, UU Fellowship at Salisbury and UU of Southern Delaware.

The Rev. D. Michael Smith, minister of the UUSD congregation, explains, "We are honored to host the assembly of over 300 members and guests of the Delmarva congregations in Lewes for the first time. We extend a warm welcome to interested local residents to attend this special free event."

The celebration consists of a multigenerational service highlighted by uplifting, joyful music by the combined congregations’ choir led by Marcelle Schiff, UUSD’s music director.

Children are welcome, and the service includes a Story for All Ages, "Babble" by Erika Hewitt from her book, “Story, Song, and Spirit” involving the participation of kids from the congregations. A qualified ASL interpreter will interpret the service for the deaf in American Sign Language.

The event concludes with a fabulous luncheon from local vendors, giving attendees the opportunity to meet and become acquainted with each other.

The theme of this year’s gathering, the Warming Spirit of Community, reflects the spirit of Unitarian Universalism, an inclusive religion rooted in love and freedom, rather than creeds or dogma. Unitarian Universalism provides a liberal spiritual home for people of all faiths valuing the dignity of each person, diversity, and social and environmental justice.

The celebration will replace the UUSD service usually held each Sunday at 10 a.m. open to everyone at the church at 33739 Marsh Road. Childcare and nursery care are available.
