Katherine A. Meding, longtime nurse

September 13, 2013

Katherine Anne Meding of Milford passed away at home with her family by her side Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013. Anne was born Dec. 6, 1935, in Silver Spring, Md., daughter of the late William C. and Katherine V. (Knapp) DeNeane.

She was a graduate of both the University of Maryland and Franklin Square in Baltimore, from where she received her registered nursing degree. Anne was an instructor at the Milford Memorial Hospital School of Nursing for seven years, leaving her position there to pursue her dream of working in the recovery room of Milford Memorial Hospital, which she had been instrumental in designing and putting into place for patients transitioning after surgery. Her nursing career spanned 40 years until she retired in 1995.

She was a woman of many talents and interests. In addition to her nursing career, Anne played a major role in the family business, Meding & Son Seafood, started by her husband in 1983. She was known as "Miss Anne" to the restaurant staff. She was a natural when it came to cooking, creating with just the right ingredients many of the No. 1 dishes served in the restaurant, such as her famous cream of crab soup and crab balls to mention only a few. To her credit also are two cookbooks, Catches of the Sea I & II, which she wrote and published. That familiar face that eagerly greeted customers as they entered will be greatly missed. In her leisure time, Anne enjoyed tole and china painting, liquid embroidery and scrapbooking, and was an avid Redskins fan. She loved spending family time with her grandchildren and looked forward to vacationing in Florida with her husband at their home in Indian Rocks Beach. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Milford where she had been an active member of the United Methodist Women and one of the churches circles. One of Anne's favorite sayings, as true in death as during her life was, "Not good-bye, but so long or tootles."

The Meding family would like to extend a special debt of gratitude to the four women who lovingly helped care for her during her illness, Eunice, Ashley, Lisa and Casey. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Henry D. Meding; a son, Robert W. Meding and his wife Melinda of Milford; four daughters, Katherine Jeanne Pavlik and her husband David of Lewes, Karen S. Meding of Austin, Texas, Donna Light and Debbie Robinson, both of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Margaret "Peggy" DeNeane of Manassas, Va., and Frances Clarkson of Staytonville; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 12 p.m., Monday, Sept. 16, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 SE Front St., Milford, where friends may call from 9:45 until 11:45 a.m. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to Bayhealth Foundation, MMH Building Fund, In Memory of Anne Meding, 640 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901. Arrangements handled by Rogers Funeral Home, Milford.
