Popular Corn to Run and Dogfish Dash races on tap this weekend

September 27, 2013

The Middletown Invite was held Sept. 27 at Lums Pond State Park with Cape Henlopen and Sussex Tech joining seven other teams for the competition. The 3.1-mile flat course challenges the field with a combination of open running in the first half of the race and single-track trail in the second half.  From the gun, it was Cape’s Austin MacElrevey taking it out with Victor Rueda and Jake Bamforth of Tech as the threesome pushed together through the halfway point. St. Andrew's Alex Mcllvaine would take over the lead in mile three and go on to win the race in 17:00. Rueda took second in the race in 17:13, followed by MacElrevey in third with a time of 17:26. The Tech boys captured the team title with five runners in the top 16 with Sam Hete in fifth in 17:42, Jake Bamforth in ninth in 17:55, Sonny Landis in 11th in 18:03, and freshman Ben Bamforth 16th in 18:22.

On Sept. 25 on the new Sussex Tech back-up course in Georgetown, the Riders of Caesar Rodney came to town as the favorite to win the conference championship. Sussex Tech did not have the depth to stay with the Riders as Sam Phillips won the race in 16:48 and led his team to a 24-33 win over the Ravens. Victor Rueda led Tech, finishing in second place in 17:00, followed by Sam Hete in fifth at 17:14. Jake Bamforth was sixth in 17:23, while Sonny Landis was 10th in 18:03. Freshman Ben Bamforth rounded out the top five in 11th place overall in 18:20.

On the girls' side, the Riders crushed the Ravens by a score of 17-46 with Tasha Taylor the lone Raven to break into the top 10. Taylor finished fourth in 21:48.

Both Cape and Tech will compete in the Tidewater Classic Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Salisbury, Md.

Dogfish Dash 5K/10K

This Sunday morning, Sept. 29, the town of Milton will host the annual Dogfish Dash 5K and 10K races, which will bring 1,850 runners and several hundred family members to town. The streets will be wall-to-wall runners on Chestnut, Union, Country Road, and Bay & Atlantic from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The event is closed; however, you can still come and cheer on the runners or volunteer at the water stops at the VFW Post on Country Road or the Milton Park behind the library. Arrive early and carpool to the brewery if possible. See you at Dogfish.

Striders will miss volunteer Addie

One of the Seashore Striders' longtime volunteers, Addie Lessard, passed away Sept. 23 after a battle with cancer. Addie and his wife Michelle would drive an hour to the beach to arrive at 6 a.m. and work registration for two hours before jumping in the race and competing, often finishing side by side and usually with a smile. Addie sometimes arrived while I was out on the course, and every time I saw him he would ask me the same two questions: Where is the rest room, and Can you get me a chair? I began to carry my own chair in the trailer for Addie and always made sure rest rooms were unlocked by 6 a.m. The Striders were lucky to have Addie, and he will be missed.
