Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K set Oct. 20 at Del Tech

The American Cancer Society will hold its Kent/Sussex Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk in starting at 9 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 20 at Delaware Tech Community College Owens Campus in Georgetown.

A 36-person team sponsored by Ocean Medical Imaging in Milton has been training for the event. Local breast cancer survivor Cindy Canevari of Milford is part of a team that trains with Results by Doug each Sunday morning in Camden. Caneveri is the Delaware State Lead Ambassador for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.

Canevari began running in November 2012 and recently ran her first 5K in preparation for Making Strides. Diagnosed with invasive lobular breast cancer in 2005 and treated with chemotherapy, Canevari began volunteering in 2006 for the American Cancer Society. She now travels, speaks, and educates to encourage legislation to fund research and screening programs. She works as a physical therapy assistant at Beebe Medical Center.

In 2007, Canevari was diagnosed with bladder cancer, had three tumors removed, and soon after became proactive about her health. “Research shows that diet and exercise play an important part in preventing recurrence and beating disease. That’s the only thing I can really control - diet, exercise and weight,” she said. She began training and lost 22 pounds. Exercise is good for the side effects of Canevari’s cancer treatment, as well as strengthening her fight against cancer.

Ocean Medical Imaging is owned by Dr. Jon Patterson, and his wife, Kristen, is sponsoring the team. The team is captained by Stephany Shetz Favoroso, who has lost 100 pounds in a year.

The Kent/Sussex Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is one of 300 Making Strides events, 1 million people strong, being held across the country this year.
