Alfred George Best, Best Store founder

Alfred George Best, 85, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at his late residence.  He was born in Milford Feb. 28, 1928, son of the late Thomas and Emily Floyd Best.

Mr. Best was a 1946 graduate of the former Lewes High School where he had served as president of the band, honor society and class.  His career throughout the years has involved farming and assisting in the many facets of the Best Family Operations which included beginning work with the granary begun by his father at Nassau and the later development of the Best Store and Best Farm Equipment, all of Nassau.  At the time of his passing he was president of the family corporation, Thomas Best & Sons, and was involved in the overseeing of Best Farm Equipment and the Southern States franchise which he affiliated with 25 years ago.

For many years he served on the board of directors of the Sussex Trust Company Bank and later as a member of the executive board for Wilmington Trust Bank.

He was a member of the Redmen - Tribe 37, Nassau, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.  However, he was most at ease when he was out farming on the weekends and enjoying nature.  A lover of all animals he always had a dog of some type nearby to keep him company.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years this coming December,  Mary Edna Walls Best; two sons, Alfred G. Best Jr. and his wife Fay, and Robert F. Best Sr., all of Lewes; a daughter, Linda E. Best and companion Bruce Nowakowski of Lewes; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes, where friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will follow the services at St. Peter's Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.
