Epworth Skate Project on a roll, heading toward $50K goal
Epworth UMC Skate Project is raising funds to build a concrete skate park where wooden ramps currently exist on the grounds of Epworth United Methodist Church at 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach.
“Money has poured in from the community,” said project member Susan Selph. “Our area has needed a skate park for so long. It is a dream come true for many people, and we have Epworth to thank for the opportunity,”
"Parents, grandparents, and local business owners have been happy to have the opportunity to contribute,” said supporter and member Tricia Ratner.
Numerous fundraisers are being hosted by local businesses to help the group achieve its goal. From 5:30 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, An Evening at X for Epworth Skate Park will be hosted by Planet X at 35 Wilmington Ave. in Rehoboth. It will feature a special $5 small plate menu and nonalcoholic drink specials (regular menu and drinks are available). Fifty percent of the proceeds from the small plate menu will go to the skate park fund. Reservations can be made at 302-226-1928.
Zumba for Skate Epworth will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, at Epworth UM Church. Five dynamic instructors from Delaware and Pennsylvania - Mandy Savage, Kelly Serpico, Brian VanScyoc, Susanne Salve, and Kim Malone - will lead the dance. “We are very excited and optimistic that our Zumba event will raise substantial funds for this wonderful asset to the community,” said organizer Kim Malone. No dance experience is required. Price is $20 at the door or $15 in advance through PayPal at www.eumcrb.org/paypal.
“I am thrilled that after years of kids wishing they had a skate park, the Epworth project is making their dreams become a reality,” said Kids' Ketch owner Teresa Ford. Ford will donate 10 percent of her sales to the skate fund on Kids' Ketch Skate Day, Saturday, Oct.12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kids' Ketch is on Second Street in Lewes.
From 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, award-winning restaurateur Hari Cameron will host a benefit at a(MUSE.), 44 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth. A $5 donation is suggested. Patrons will be treated to complimentary hors d’oeuvres.
The Big Chill Surf Cantina will host An Evening with Gene starting at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20. Local businessman Gene Aarons will be the host of the evening during which 10 percent of total sales will be donated to the skate fund. The Big Chill Surf Cantina is at 19406 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth.
Donation jars for the Skate Fund can be found at the following local businesses: Alley Oop, Coastal Highway, Dewey Beach; East of Maui in Dewey Beach and Lewes; Liquid Board Shop, Coastal Highway, Rehoboth; and Sierra Moon Surf and Skate, Rehoboth Avenue.
Epworth will host a Skate Day from 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20. The event is free and open to the public and will include skate contests and a beginners' clinic.
