T.S. Smith & Sons to hold 2013 Apple Harvest Festival Oct. 12

October 6, 2013

T.S. Smith & Sons, Delaware's oldest and Sussex County's only commercial apple orchard, will host its 2013 Apple Harvest Festival Saturday, Oct. 12, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Visitors of all ages can enjoy a wagon ride to tour the 106-year-old Delaware Century Farm, observe an old-fashioned apple cider press demonstration, meet the farm's beekeeper and view a demonstration bee hive. The Sussex Master Gardeners' puppet show “The Adventures of Peter Rabbit in Farmer McGregor's Garden” will delight children.

Kevin Fleming, acclaimed author and photographer, will be on hand to debut, for the first time anywhere, his new book, "Beaches." Personalized signed copies will be available for sale. Visitors can say hello to the Delaware Apple Queen and experience a helicopter ride.

For those seeking time on the farm, transportation will be provided to the apple orchard, where the public will be able to pick their own apples and pumpkins, weather and availability dependent. The public can also drive directly to the you-pick locations just east of U.S. 13 on Redden Road.

Inside the historic farm market, visitors can pick up award-winning recipes to create popular dishes using apples at home. A wide variety of fresh produce from the farm will be offered for sale along with farm market favorites such as apple cider donuts, fresh pressed apple cider, and apple butter. Outside they will find hard ciders made with the farm’s fruit by Great Shoals Winery in Princess Anne, Md. There will also be locally produced ice cream featuring the farm's fruit.

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the upbeat, talented Flat Land Drive will showcase some of the best bluegrass music anywhere. From 1 to 3 p.m., Luxury Liner will perform alternative country hits that everyone will enjoy. Lunar Landing, performing an eclectic blend of classic rock and blues, will wrap up the day with their performance from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Park at the farm, 8899 Redden Road and catch the free bus transportation to festival events in town. From the downtown area, catch the free bus from PNC Bank for a short ride to the farm.
