What's wrong with New Life Thrift Shop?

October 10, 2013

What’s happening at the New Life Thrift Shop? There have been changes and many folks including myself have serious concerns.

I was a volunteer for more than years with my last 12 months serving as general manager of the store. It was a very rewarding experience to follow in the footsteps of Dutch Kelly, Jerry Peregoy and others in supporting an important outreach ministry to the Lewes and Rehoboth areas.

You might imagine the amazing “rush” that one receives from working the front lines to pull together those who donate items, to interact with a 100 or so volunteer staff, to develop a solid management team and to haggle with the many die hard customers. I can only say thanks for the great opportunity to serve this ministry.

It was with great sorrow that my wife and I resigned earlier this year (as volunteers) with strong feelings of diminished support from Lewes-Rehoboth Association of Churches. Of course, when you walk away from something, you also jeopardize your position when speaking out. Shame on me!

The New Life Thrift Shop is not just a facility owned by LRAC, it is a community landmark of almost historic proportions. It is an amazing story! Just ask a cross section of volunteers, the donors, the customers and the representatives of the member churches.

• So, is it important to the community or not?

• Is the store really receiving (any) adequate oversight from LRAC?

• Are the donors, volunteers and customers being treated fairly?

• Would anyone care if the store no longer existed?

For your thoughtful and prayerful consideration,

Gene King
