Cape Region leaps into fall

It was very hard to miss, but in case you did, Dewey went pink over the week­end. Hundreds of runners and walkers showed up for a race to raise money for breast cancer and the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, an organization that works hard to promote breast health through education and low-cost screenings and mammograms while supporting people with breast cancer through­out Delaware.

Dewey Goes Pink attracted a record 1,600 largely pink-clad, pink-haired or even pink­painted participants, who ran and walked under cloudless skies on their way to raising thousands of dollars to fight a disease that in one way or another affects so many people in the Cape Region. It was a bit of a battle for Starboard owner Steve Montgomery to win approval to paint Dewey pink, but this event has proven to be a great race for participants, attracting teams with dozens of members who showed up to raise money in support or in honor of loved ones with breast cancer.

The race also proved a great way to kick off the shoulder season in Dewey Beach, drawing hundreds of people into town to discover the many venues still open and spilling over into Rehoboth Beach where crowds continue to enjoy the beach and Boardwalk.

Then on Sunday, Coast Day and Boast the Coast put on display the outstanding facili­ties at the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment and downtown Lewes, drawing hundreds more to learn how scientists are working locally to promote a healthy environment to ensure the wonders of the coast will continue to beckon new genera­tions of visitors.

Like the many races, triathlons and other events held year-round in the Cape Region, Dewey Goes Pink and Coast Day encourage people to get out, get active, find some friends and enjoy the spectacular beauty of our coast.

And we’re just getting started. Jazz is com­ing to town, and Sea Witch and the engineer­ing extravaganza known as World Champion­ship Punkin Chunkin can’t be far behind. After that it’s Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival which takes us right up to the holi­days. Let’s not even think about what comes after that. Next year’s tourist season will be here before we know it.
