DelDOT to hold workshop on Route 26 project

The Delaware Department of Transportation will be holding a public workshop to inform surrounding businesses and the general public on the State Route 26, Atlantic Avenue, Clarksville to Assa­woman Canal Project. The public workshop will be held Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the South Coastal Library, 43 Kent Ave., Bethany Beach. This project, which involves the reconstruction of Route 26, Atlantic Avenue from Clarksville to the Assawoman Ca­nal, is to improve traffic operations, safety, and roadway conditions within the project area.

School board to hold special meeting Oct. 14

The Cape Henlopen school board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, for a special meeting in the cafeteria of Bea­con Middle School. The board will take action on two student discipline cases. Presentations will be made on the Freedom of Information Act and land purchase for a new elementary school.

Building height, bonding on agenda

Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the county administra­tion building on The Circle in Georgetown. On the agenda are discussions on height regula­tions and proposed changes in the county’s bonding proce­dures. Dewey commissioners to establish committees

Dewey Beach Town Council will meet at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12 at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue. The town planning commission will report on possible changes to zoning regulations related to sea-level rise. Lewes offices closed for holiday

City of Lewes and Lewes Board of Public Works offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 14, in observance of Columbus Day. Offices will open at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15. Trash will be collected one day later than usual. Recycling will be collected on schedule.

Wolfe explores run for Senate seat

Gary Wolfe of Greenwood has filed paperwork with the Board of Elections to explore running for Delaware’s 18th Senate District, which includes Milford, Harrington, Houston, Farmington, Greenwood, Slaugh­ter Beach and Ellendale. The district is currently represented by Senate Minority Leader Gary Simpson, R-Milford.

“I am exploring the oppor­tunity of running for the state Senate, as I believe my experi­ence and knowledge would make me both an effective legislator and advocate for the citizens of the 18th district,” Wolfe said in a press release. Wolfe is a former school board member and president of the Delaware School Board Association. He said he has served as a fireman and emergency medical techni­cian with the volunteer services in his community. Wolfe said his experiences have taught him to work for the common good by facilitating tough discussions and listening to opposing per­spectives. He said he has the ability to lean into tough issues and challenge himself while being open-minded and willing to work collaboratively to serve the constituents of District 18. Former state trooper to run for governor

Lacey Lafferty, a lifelong Dela­ware resident, has filed to run as a Republican candidate in the 2016 gubernatorial race.

Lafferty is a retired Delaware State Police Trooper. She runs a farm where she raises horses in Laurel. According to a press release, she has authored several books and is active in various community associations. Laffer­ty said she is a staunch defender of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. She said she plans to deal with the problems fac­ing Delaware in a direct and timely manner. Lafferty is a di­rect descendant of John Morton, signer of the Declaration of In­dependence. Sussex council awards grants to nonprofits

Sussex County Council award­ed the following councilmanic grants during its Oct. 8 meeting: $1,100 to Beebe Medical Founda­tion for its annual Beebe Ball to benefit the school of nursing; $300 to Overfalls Foundation for vessel maintenance; and $1,000 to Delaware Hospice for its golf tournament fundraiser. Council awards grants to nonprofit agen­cies and organizations.

Veterans’ online directory wins award

The new Delaware Veterans Services Directory has won recognition from a national eGovernment research institute for its innovative approach to providing services to an im­portant segment of Delaware’s population.

The directory, which serves more than 79,000 Delaware vet­erans and their families, was named a winner of a 2013 Digi­tal Government Achievement Award in the Government-to-Business category by the Center for Digital Government.

Accessible at www.delaware. gov/vsd, the VSD is a statewide online listing of public and private organizations offering services to Delaware veterans and their families.

It brings together a com­munity of partners in a single, online portal that features links to employment services, hous­ing services, medical services, and education services, among others.

Pumpkin decorating contest at Upper Crust

The Upper Crust will trans­form its herb garden into the site of The Great Pumpkin Decorat­ing Contest Oct. 21 to 30.

Judging will take place at the close of business Oct. 30 with prizes awarded for first-, sec­ond- and third-place entries. Participants can register their pumpkins at The Upper Crust, 7 E. Market St. in Georgetown,.

Milton guild holds special art show, sale

The Milton Arts Guild will hold its Fall Art Show in con­junction this year with the annual Fall into Milton Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19.

This special one-day show and sale, scheduled from noon to 5 p.m., is being hosted by Tidewater Physical Therapy on its premises at 611 Federal St. in Milton Medical Park.

Well-known guild member artists will be exhibiting new works including artwork in vari­ous media such as oil, water color and acrylic as well as pho­tographs and decorative works.
