There are solutions on Route One
DelDOT's recent announcement of a pending invitation to bid on safety improvements to divided Route 1 has provoked a much deserved chorus of local opposition. But what does Route 1 here at the beaches really need?
For starters, all stakeholders should accept the premise that this facility is a transport corridor for motor vehicles. Bicyclists and pedestrians should expect to exercise due caution along this corridor; their numbers do not justify untoward public investment there for their purported benefit.
Any improvements at this point need to be funded to at least the 25 percent level via assessment in a special surtax district on property to a depth of one-third mile on both sides of the corridor centerline.
Clearly, the one pedestrian facility appropriate now is an arch culminating in elevator enclosures, to be placed just north of Holland Glade Road, to provide a dedicated crossing between Bayside and Oceanside Tanger Outlets.
