Sea Witch 5K Classic draws record number of runners

In Henlopen Conference cross country action, the Vikings from Cape Henlopen traveled west to Sussex Tech Oct. 23 to take on the Ravens, Milford Bucs, and Delmarva Christian in the final tri meet of the year. When the dust settled on the 5,000-meter course, Cape ran over Milford 23-37 and Sussex Tech easily topped Cape 20-35. Sussex Tech also beat Milford 17-44. Individually in the boys' race, Cape’s Austin MacElrevey set a new course record of 16:42, pulling away from Victor Rueda and Jake Bamforth of Tech at the midway point of the race. Rueda held onto second place, hitting the line in 16:57, while Bamforth was third in 17:00. Tech’s Sonny Landis was fourth in 17:12, while Milford runner Brandon Munce was fifth in 17:26. Tech freshman Ben Bamforth ran 17:32 for sixth place, while Tech’s Sam Hete was seventh overall in 17:34. Milford’s Andrew Eschelmen ran 17:37, while Soloman Cox of Cape finished ninth in 17:40. Ryan Thornburg of Cape wrapped up the top 10 in a time of 17:42. Sussex Tech was able to place its top five runners among the top seven in the race.

Vikings beat Ravens and Bucs in girls' action

In girls' action, the Vikings topped both the Ravens 20-41 and the Bucs 25-34, while the Bucs also topped the Ravens 23-33. Milford’s Amy Wilson won the individual title in 20:53 by five seconds over Madison MacElrevey of Cape, who hit the line in 20:58. Janin Rodriguez of Milford ran 21:22, while Tech's Natasha Taylor ran 21:30 for fourth place. The Vikings took the next three spots as Rachel Best was fifth in 21:36, Keren Rams was sixth in 21:59, and Sarah Dziel was seventh in 22:07. Milford’s Lydia Cole was eighth in 22:14, while Megan Davidson of Tech was ninth in 22:24. Maggie Heffernan of Cape rounded out the top 10 in 22:53.

Both the Vikings and the Ravens will join Indian River, Seaford and Sussex Central for the Sussex County Championships to be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Chapel Branch Trail in Seaford.

Middle school cross country

The Mariner Middle School boys' cross country team beat Phillis Wheatley 24-35, led by Mariner runner Bryan Ciabbatoni, who won the 1.5-mile race in 9:59 at the UD Virden Center.

Boys' results were as follows: 1. Bryan Ciabbatoni, Mariner, 9:59; 2. Kyle Cope, Mariner, 10:04; 3. Jeremy Breeding, Wheatley, 10:07; 4. Randy Robb, Wheatley, 10:34; 5. Rejahn Hill, Wheatley, 10:36; 6. Logan Dominick, Mariner, 11:05; 7. Parker Brown, Mariner, 11:07; 8. Collin Nauman, Mariner, 11:12; 9. James Wells, Mariner, 12:58; 10. Jordan McNair, Mariner, 13:11; 11. Zachary Simpler, Mariner, 13:40; 12. Mason Merwitz, Mariner, 15:04.

On the girls' side, Wheatley won 15-50, led by Kayla Brandenburg with a time of 11:13. Rounding out the top 10 were the following: 2. Allison Carey, Wheatley, 11:28; 3. Alyssa Breeding, Wheatley, 11:29; 4. Neve Heck, Wheatley, 11:44; 5. Destinee Addlesberger, Wheatley, 11:53; 6. Yesenia Ramirez, Mariner, 12:00; 7. Farah Joy, Wheatley, 13:08; 8. Maragelique Gonzalez, Wheatley, 13:20; 9. Mary Joy, Wheatley, 13:52; 10. Holly Todd, Wheatley, 18:53.

Sea Witch Fall 5K Classic

One of the most popular 5K events in the state will take place this Sunday, Oct. 27, in Rehoboth Beach as the Sea Witch Fall 5K Classic will begin at 9 a.m. from Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach. The 3.1-mile run and 1-mile walk will feature long-sleeve tech Ts to all preregistered participants, custom awards, a bake sale and iPad raffle to benefit the Youth Striders cross country team, a costume contest, and plenty of runners dressed for the occasion. Parking will be on Rehoboth Avenue, just past the roundabout. Arrive early, as a record field of more than 400 participants is expected to take part.

Youth Strider XC

The Youth Striders took part in the Brandywine Invite Oct. 19, hosted by Ursuline in hilly Brandywine Creek State Park on the 2.25-mile varsity course and the 1.15-mile JV course. Third-grader Luke Burton brought home the gold as the fearless runner ran the course in 6:55 in the grade 3-4 race. Blake Hundley finished second in the boys' varsity as he ran one of the most difficult courses in the nation in 13:39. Logan Shuttleworth finished third in the girls' varsity in a time of 15:44, while Emma Barthelmess led her team in the JV race in 7:18 for fifth. Lindsay Rambo was 13th in 7:38, while Rose Minni was 16th in 7:45. Lindsey Guida was 18th in 7:48, while Lainey Shockro was 22nd in 7:24. Emily Lamb was 25th in 8:07, while Natalie Guida was 29th in 8:13. Brooke Jones was 36th in 8:21, while Emily Moody was 58th in 8:54. Devin Hundley was also timed in 8:54, good for 59th. Jackson Dinger on the boys' side was 22nd in 7:34, while Tony Minni was 25th in 7:38. Ethan Shuttleworth was 37th in 7:56.
