Delaware State Police arrested a 77-year-old Bridgeville man Nov. 2 after a traffic stop led to his 11th DUI charge.
A trooper was driving southbound at about 6:40 p.m. on Coverdale Road just north of Hastings Farm Road when he saw a truck speeding, said state police Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
The truck was in the southbound lane and swerved into the northbound lane several times, Fournier said.
The trooper activated his patrol car's emergency equipment and the truck turned left onto Hastings Farm Road where it came to a stop in a private driveway. The driver, Ruppert Bell Jr., showed signs of impairment, prompting a DUI investigation, Fournier said.
Bell was taken to Troop 5 where he was arrested. He also was charged with driving after judgment prohibited for prior DUIs, driving while suspended or revoked, failure to remain in a single lane and speeding.
A computer check revealed 10 previous convictions of DUI that began to Jan. 15, 1987. Bell was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $16,102 cash bond.
Bell's other previous convictions were for incidents on Feb. 21, 1987; Sept. 1, 1987; Feb. 11, 1989; April 7, 1990; Nov. 3, 1990; Sept. 25, 1993; Dec. 4, 1998; July 12, 2003; and June 4, 2005.
