James Mears Sr., loved horses

James Brooks Mears Sr. of Georgetown passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family Friday, Nov. 1, 2013.

Mr. Mears was born in Georgetown to the late David H. and Ethel (Rogers) Mears. He was a member of Mount Olive Brethren Church. He worked for nine years as a state highway road Inspector and 17 years in road construction. Mr. Mears was a farmer and built the Homestead Trailer Park and remained the owner from 1972-89. He loved horses and was a member of the Driving Association as well as a member of the Farm Bureau.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary S. (Jones) Mears in 1997; and his daughter, Eunice Mervine. He is survived by his sons, James B. Mears Jr. and wife Lois, and Rodney G. Mears and wife Beverly, both of Georgetown; daughters, Susan Koontz and husband Bill of Pinehurst, N.C., and Kelly E. Timmons and husband Matt of Georgetown; one sister, Eleanor Lambden of Georgetown; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m., in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after noon. Interment will be in Union Cemetery.
