Kindergarten cops
Delaware State Police troopers recently went back to school, spending a morning in kindergarten at Georgetown Elementary School Kindergarten campus. The officers taught children about stranger danger and urged them to call 911 if they need help.
Georgetown Kindergarten Campus Principal Dr. Janet Hickman said the program reinforces day-to-day life skills the 330 mostly non-English speaking young students at her school are learning.
"We are trying to build experiences for them; the majority of students have not been away from home, and most have not been to preschool," Hickman said. "So many of them have not met a police officer, so we are trying to build a good experience for them."
Master Cpl. Jorge Camacho showed students his police vehicle while fellow officer Sgt. Bernard Miller gave a presentation in classrooms and showed a short video.
"What you see on TV, that's not real. What's real is you need to trust us," Camacho said. "What's the number to call when you are in trouble? Call 911! It works, when you call 911, you will get somebody."
