Gerald G. “Jerry” West, passion for racing

Gerald G. “Jerry” West, 73, of Georgetown, passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at Bayhealth/Milford Memorial Hospital.

Jerry was a contract mechanic for Megee Plumbing in Georgetown for over 25 years. He did mechanic work on the side for many local people and businesses; and served a 20-year term in the National Guard.

He was an avid fan of stock car racing, the Green Bay Packers, Dodge and Chrysler. Racing was a passion for him and he had a long-time career in the field. Jerry was well known for his Modified No. 98. He drove for himself, but also for David Alfred Parker, Bill Reed and others over the years.

He dearly loved his family and enjoyed every moment spent with them, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his mother, Grace West, he is preceded in death by a son, Kyle West, in 1988.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bonnie (Lecates) West; two sons: Richard West and wife Nancy, and Kevin West and wife Darlene; five grandchildren, Ashley Hammaker and husband Todd, Alan West and fiancé Shannon, all of Georgetown, Sarah Farrow and husband Andrew, of Georgetown, Md., Kevin West Jr., and wife Shana, also of Georgetown, Jeffrey West and friend Logan Pardee, of Cecilton, Md.; four great-grandchildren, Austin and Kaylee Farrow, Miranda and Paisley Hammaker and a fifth great-grandchild due in March.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 11, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, with visitation after noon. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.
