Sussex council presents nonprofit grants
Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its Nov. 12 meeting: $1,000 to Fenwick Island Lions Club for program expenses; $250 to Sussex County Foster Parent Association for its annual holiday party; $700 to Rehoboth Concert Band for equipment and supplies; $600 to Town of Blades for its children’s Christmas bazaar; $1,000 to Mason-Dixon Woodworkers for its toys for needy children program; and $721 to World Championship Punkin Chunkin. Council awards grants to nonprofit agencies and organizations putting on events and providing services to county residents.
Lewes to set Point Farm annexation hearing
Lewes Mayor and City Council will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 11, in City Hall.
Agenda items include consideration of a resolution to schedule a public hearing to receive comments on the proposed Point Farm annexation; consideration of administrative changes to Historic Preservation Commission regulations including the decision to schedule monthly meetings in place of bi-monthly meetings; and consideration of a Lewes Planning Commission recommendation to approve recombining two lots, and then a minor re-subdivision into two lots, land at 1708 Bay Ave. owned by Alan W. Vessels Jr.
The panel will also consider a planning commission recommendation to approve revisions to its bylaws; a revision to the General Commercial Zoning District to include a special exception for multi-family and two-family dwellings; information about restroom renovations in Mary Vessels and Zwaanendael parks; and a presentation about Lewes Police Department renovations.

Sussex County Council will discuss gun shops
Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the county administration building on The Circle in Georgetown.

Milton planning commission to meet
The Milton Planning & Zoning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Milton Public Library.
Fernmoor Homes is seeking final subdivision approval for Phase 5 of Heritage Creek.
The group will also discuss a proposed ordinance to amend Chapter 220 of town code related to parking, special uses, and antennas, towers and satellite dishes.

Planners to host hearing on amendments
Dewey Beach Planning Commission will meet at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue. The commission will hold a public hearing on possible amendments to the zoning code to address sea- and bay-level rise.
One proposal would lower building permit fees for residents who make structural changes to adapt to sea-level rise.
Another proposal would force property owners to elevate their homes to minimum base flood levels.

Dewey auditors to review budget
Dewey Beach Audit Committee will meet at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at Dewey Beach Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy Avenue.
The committee is scheduled to review budget results from April through October and create a list of questions and concerns for the town manager.

Tickets on sale for Nov. 23 dinner dance
Tickets are still available for the Saturday, Nov. 23 Snowball Dinner Dance to be held from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Cape Henlopen Senior Center, 11 Christian St., Rehoboth Beach.Cost is $20 per person in advance; tickets are on sale at the center.
The dance will be catered by Casa di Leo and feature homemade appetizers and music by DJ Norman Mullinex.
Dewey raises fine for public urination
Dewey Beach Town Council voted 4-1 to raise the fee for public urination from $90 to $200 at its Nov. 9 meeting. Dewey Beach Police Sgt. Cliff Dempsey requested the increase, saying the higher fine would deter offenders.
“It is such a nuisance in our community,” he said. Dempsey said the crime would remain a civil offense.
Commissioner Gary Mauler voted against the increase. 'What if someone’s really got to go?' Mauler asked.

Milton Town Council and the planning and zoning commission will hold a joint meeting at 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, at the Milton Public Library. The purpose of the meeting is to better define the relationship between the two boards.
The group will discuss division of responsibilities, define work load process, brainstorm ways to increase communication between council and the commission, and outline a draft ordinance for procedures and reviews.

Affordable Care Act seminar slated Nov. 20
As a free public service, the Positive Growth Alliance is partnering with the Caesar Rodney Institute to present a seminar on the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the Millsboro Fire Hall, 109 E. State St., Millsboro.
A presentation will be made by experts from Blue Cross, and they will also be available to answer questions.

Sussex approves human service grants
At its Nov. 5 meeting, Sussex County Council approved more than 90 human service grants for 2014 totaling more than $143,000.
Local agencies receiving grants include: Cape Henlopen Food Basket, $500; seven CHEER centers, $5,000 each; Cool Spring Civic Association, $500; Greater Lewes Community Village, $750; Kiwanis Foundation of Coastal Sussex, $1,000; Lewes Historical Society, $1,000; Meals on Wheels of Lewes and Rehoboth, $6,000; Milton Historical Society, $1,000; Oak Orchard/Riverdale Boys and Girls Club, $1,500; Pinetown Civic Association, $500; Rehoboth Beach Boys and Girls Club, $1,500; Cape Henlopen Senior Center, $5,000; Lewes Senior Center, $5,000; Indian River Senior Center, $5,000; and Sussex Family YMCA, $1,000.
