Dorothy E. Dick, former art teacher

Mrs. Dorothy E. Dick, 86, of Millsboro, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013.

Mrs. Dick was born June 2, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Ralph W. and Esther E. Smith Jones. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband John R. Dick Jr. in 2009.

Mrs. Dick retired from the Indian River School District after teaching art for 22 years. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the Red Hat Society. She was a graduate of Friends Central High School and the University of Delaware. She loved to travel, paint, read, garden, and go to the beach. She loved animals and supported animal rescue groups. She had an amazing ability of controlling her classroom with poise and grace without raising her voice. She loved her family and was a devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by three sons, Allee W. Dick of New York City, John Redstreak Dick III of Raleigh, N.C., and Leslie A. “Lad” Dick and his wife Lisa of Millsboro; a daughter, Holly Dick Ellis of Houston, Texas; and five grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Kristen, Brandon and Kaylynn. She is also survived by her canine friend Shadow as well as many friends and former students.

A viewing and visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, at All Saints’ Cemetery near Harbeson.
