First State Community Action holds annual awards dinner

Monique Milbourne received the Personal Achievement Award. Melbourne always dreamed of owning a home. She worked with housing counselor Eva Ramos and took housing workshops and financial literacy workshops. She improved her credit and became a homeowner. She has recently enrolled at Del Tech with a goal of getting an associate degree in social work. The keynote speaker for the awards dinner was Dr. Tony Campolo, PhD. Campolo is professor emeritus of sociology at Eastern University. He is the founder and president of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education. He has worked to create, nurture and support programs for at-risk children in cities across North America. Campolo is a media commentator on religion, social and political matters and has appeared on numerous television programs. Campolo broke his address into three parts addressing poverty. “We must experience heightened awareness of poverty.” “We must care about poverty. We must act to prevent poverty.” BY STEVEN BILLUPS

The First State Community Action Agency held its annual awards dinner Nov. 18 at Dover Downs. The Stanford Bratton Award for Community Service, the Community Partners Award, the Personal Achievment Award and the Employee of the Year were all presented at the event.

Shown receiving the The Stanford Bratton Award for Community Service is John Hollis with First Sate Community Executive Director Bernice Edwards. Hollis is currently the senior advisor of policy, community infrastructure and government affairs and lobbyist for Nemours Health and Prevention Services. 

Hollis has spent his life serving the community. His accomplishments are very extensive, from coaching football, swimming and track and field to receiving awards in public service from several organizations in the state.
