Cape swimming looks to make a splash in the Henlopen Conference

December 9, 2013

The Cape Henlopen swim teams are back in the pool at the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth preparing to do battle for the Henlopen Conference titles.

The Viking girls' squad swam to an 11-0 season last year, taking home the Henlopen Conference title. Back to defend the title are starters Kayleigh Eckrote, Kaitlin Philcox, Romy Stancofski, Ursula Catts, Lauren Kelley, Elena Campbell, Hannah Schrock, Devon Warner, and Grace Brokaw. Joining them this season are freshmen Molly Weeks, Amelia Nigh-Johnson, Sarah Hyde and Sarah Rambo.

"We are going to be tough this season with both squads," said head coach Bill Geppert. "We'll have a lot of depth on the squads. The freshmen are really going to help us."

The boys' team hopes to improve on its impressive 10-1 season in which they lost only to conference champion Sussex Tech. Returning for the Vikings will be sophomore Jack Weeks, who broke records in the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke. Joining Weeks will be Luke DiGuglielmo, Charlie Burton, John Dean, Troy Saltiel, Nate Griffith and Danny Myers.

After traveling to Saints Peter & Paul Tuesday, Dec. 10, the two teams open their home schedule with rival Sussex Tech Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Sussex Family YMCA. The meet starts at 3:15.
