Catholic Charities to unite with Pope Francis Dec. 10 to end world hunger

December 4, 2013

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Wilmington will unite with Pope Francis Tuesday, Dec. 10, in a worldwide movement to respond to the needs of the poor and vulnerable by praying and acting to end hunger.

The Pope has asked that everyone join in a “wave of prayer” that will circle the world. At noon local time, the wave of prayer will begin in Tongaand will progress around the world until it reaches American Samoa some 24 hours and more than 164 countries later.

Bishop W. Francis Malooly will lead the noon prayer in the Diocese of Wilmington and will be joined by the Deans of each diocesan deanery, Vy. Rev. Norman Carroll, V.F. [City Dean], Vy. Rev. Joseph Drobinski, V.F. [Central New Castle Deanery], Vy. Rev. Stanley J. Russell, V.F. [Brandywine Hundred Deanery], Vy. Rev. James S. Lentini, V.F. [Silver Lake Deanery], Vy. Rev. Paul F. Jennings, V.F. [Eastern Shore Deanery], Vy. Rev. Richard Smith, V.F. [Ocean Deanery], and Vy. Rev. Arthur Fiore, V.F. [Iron Hill Deanery]. The staff of Catholic Charities, students and teachers at Catholic schools throughout the Diocese, and staff at diocesan churches will also join in the wave of prayer, and ask that others pause to participate as well.

Join Catholic Charities in reciting the One Human Family, Food For All campaign prayer:

O God, you entrusted to us the fruits of all creation so that we might care for the earth and be nourished with its bounty. You sent us Your Son to share our very flesh and blood and to teach us Your Law of Love. Through His death and resurrection, we have been formed into one human family. Jesus showed great concern for those who had no food – even transforming five loaves and two fish into a banquet that served five thousand and many more.

We come before You, O God, conscious of our faults and failures, but full of hope, to share food with all members in this global family. Through Your wisdom, inspire leaders of government and of business, as well as all the world’s citizens, to find just, and charitable solutions to end hunger by assuring that all people enjoy the right to food.

Thus we pray, O God, that when we present ourselves for Divine Judgment, we can proclaim ourselves as ‘One Human Family’ with ‘Food for All’. AMEN.

“In addition to joining in prayer, we ask that individuals who want to take action in responding to the hungry in our communities make a donation of nonperishable food to any Catholic Charities location,” said Richelle A. Vible, executive director. “We have food distribution programs in every county in Delaware, and in Somerset County, Md.  We continue to field requests for food assistance in the diocese, and so we are always in need of food donations.”

Donations can be made between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at two Catholic Charities locations: 406 S Bedford Street, Suite 9, Georgetown, 302-856-9578; or Casa San Francisco, 127 Broad St., Milton, 302-684-8694.
