Sophie Mae Donohoe, senior center member

Sophie Mae Donohoe (Lougheed), 92, of Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach passed away Monday, Dec. 2, 2013.

Born in Wilmington May 21, 1921, Sophie was the daughter of the late Lillie (Coates) and John Lougheed. Sophie was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School where she lettered in swimming and field hockey. She was a founding member of St. Catherine of Siena Church and a member of St Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Rehoboth. She also belonged to Cape Henlopen Senior Center, Lewes Senior Center and the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 3420.

Sophie was married to her high school sweetheart, Joe, in Florida in 1942. They lived in Wilmington until they retired to Rehoboth Beach in 1975. During their retirement they enjoyed playing golf, traveling and watching sports. Following the death of her husband, Sophie became an avid bingo player where she made many new friends, especially Ann Callahan and Lillian Hart.

Sophie was preceded by her husband Joseph W. Donohoe and son Joseph Donohoe. She is survived by her daughter Ann Doody (Arthur); granddaughters Catherine Donohoe Williamson (Brian) with whom she lived for the last year, Lisa Donohoe and Andrea Doody-Kramer (James); great-grandsons Kyle and Patrick Williamson; and daughter-in-law Kathy Donohoe.

Services will be held Thursday Dec. 5, at 11 a.m., at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 2503 Centerville Road, Wilmington. Family and friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m.

The family would like to thank the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for the excellent care provided to Sophie, especially Terry. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Cape Henlopen Senior Center or Lewes Senior Center.
