Carolyn Bell Hughes, accomplished journalist

Carolyn Bell Hughes, 97, of Bethany Beach, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013, at the Country Rest Home in Greenwood. She was the daughter of the late Samuel W. and Carolyn (Vance) Bell.

Mrs. Hughes followed in her parents' footsteps and became a journalist in the Washington, D.C. area, first for the old Times Herald and later for the Washington Post. Mrs. Hughes traveled extensively during this time, following her husband’s military assignments. She was A member of the Women’s National Press Club which her mother helped to found and establish. Mrs. Hughes' last assignment for the Washington Post came as part of the Sunday Potomac Magazine followed by reporting for the United Press International. Mrs. Hughes retired, summering in Bethany Beach. She continued writing short articles for the Whale, “Reflections of the Quiet Resorts,” and doing research and narrative for “Bethany Beach – A Walk through History 1901-1976.”

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband, of 63 years Marcellus C. Hughes and her son Christian B. Hughes. She is survived by her daughter Marcella H. Sharp and her husband Donald of Bethany Beach; her sister, Rosemary Soler of Silver Spring, Md.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one niece.
