Western Sussex MLK Day of Celebration to hold MLK Prayer Breakfast Jan. 20

Brenda Whitehurst to receive Community Recognition Award
December 13, 2013

Western Sussex MLK Day of Celebration will hold its annual Rise & Shine Prayer Breakfast at 8 a.m., Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Heritage Shores Golf and Country Club in Bridgeville.

The theme for 2014 is Fifty Years and Counting in remembrance of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic March on Washington.

This year’s Community Recognition Award recipient is Brenda Whitehurst, the Southern Delaware Market Manager for YWCA Delaware’s Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship.

She has devoted more than 20 years to life skill training and development, and eliminating racism.

A cornerstone of Whitehurst’s career has been the empowerment of women through programs of business assessment, business plan development, and advisory services designed to produce sustainable enterprises led by women.

Keynote speaker is Dr. Harry Williams, the 10th president of Delaware State University. Shortly after beginning his tenure as president, he convened a Blue Ribbon Commission which helped establish DSU as one of America’s leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Williams has been a key figure in strategic planning for education, both at home and abroad.

Musical selections will be performed by soloists Alberta Smith and Greg Brittingham.
