Zwaanendael Club should be commended

December 15, 2013

Compliments:

Dec. 7 in Lewes was a challenge to say the least with the weather presenting itself to the multiples of visitors repleat with dampness and bitter cold. The wind, which was off and on again, made it even more of a "should I have tried this?" day.

Lots of community members made puddles of sunshine for those who braved the elements as they hosted many facets of our First Town in the First State. There were gracious and thoughtful folks, including Groome U. M. Church putting up folding chairs for those who would find it difficult standing during the parade.

Much warmth and welcome emanated from the Zwaanendael Women's Club of Lewes. Folks entered a beautifully decorated room filled with homemade hats, scarves, baby wear, decorations, crafts, baked goods, candles and other delightful articles gifted by members, family or friends of members, the sale of which were to benefit our community. Visitors enjoyed a brief walk through the history of the GFWC-Delaware state federated club and its mission.

Of course, Charlie was there with his hotdog stand offering not only dogs, but his renown pulled pork sandwiches. Inside, folks could enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and soft pretzels while admiring miniature Christmas trees made by members from spearmint leaves and red berries - a take off of the trees at Tiffany's which displayed their exquisite jewelry many years ago.

I have always said that the Zwaanendael Women's Clubhouse is a jewel in the crown of Lewes antiquity. On Dec. 7, the efforts of its membership were royal.
