The Delaware Affilliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will hold its first meeting in Sussex County at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Cancer Support Community in Rehoboth Beach. For those who are facing or who have loved ones dealing with a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, this group can provide a chance to meet others who have experience with the disease. PanCAN usually meets in Newark, but President Joe Wescott responded to interested pancreatic patients and their supporters living in the lower part of the state by planning several meetings a year in Rehoboth Beach.
The Cancer Support Community supported the plan to move some meetings to Sussex County. “We are very excited about our new collaborative effort with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network,” said Jo Allegro-Smith, Sussex County director for the Cancer Support Community Delaware. “Working together, CSCD and PanCAN will provide resources, information and most importantly, hope to people affected by pancreatic cancer.”
Anyone affected by or interested in pancreatic cancer is invited to attend. PanCAN and its many volunteers help advance research, support patients, network with community outreach programs, and lead advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill. Some of the events that raise awareness and fund research are the 5K fundraiser Purple Stride; the PurpleLight Vigil, which raises awareness and increases networking; and the Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Day when PanCANmembers gather by the hundreds to discuss with members of Congress the importance of increasing pancreatic cancer research funding.
“Being part of PanCAN has been empowering and fulfilling,” said Eileen Rosenthal of Milton. “It is life-changing to be able to do something positive while my husband Mark struggles with this disease.”
