A 48-year-old Lewes man is in critical condition after he was struck by a car along Route 24 on New Year's Day.

Richard J. Heinlein was riding a bicycle at 1:23 p.m. Jan. 1 westbound on Route 24 east of Long Neck Road when a 2008 Kia Sedona driven by Paula Michelle Wilson, 47, of Bel Air, Md., struck him from behind, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

Heinlein was thrown off the bike and onto the roadway; he was not wearing a helmet, Fournier said.

Heinlein was taken to Beebe Healthcare and later airlifted to Christiana Hospital where he is in critical condition, Fournier said.

Wilson was properly restrained and uninjured.

Route 24 was closed for about two hours between Banks and Long Neck roads. No charges have been filed; police continue to investigate the incident, Fournier said.
