Harrington man dies in fiery crash east of Millsboro

January 6, 2014

A 26-year-old Harrington man died Jan. 4 after losing control on icy roads and crashing into a tractor trailer east of Millsboro.

Mark L. Smith was driving a 1998 Mercedes-Benz 300 at 8:08 a.m. westbound on Route 24 near Maryland Camp Road when he lost control on the icy road and rotated counter-clockwise, crossing into the path of a 2006 International tractor trailer operated by Kim B. Smith, 55, of Salisbury, Md., said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

The front center of the tractor trailer struck the passenger side of the Mercedes. After the impact, Fournier said, both vehicles traveled off the south side of the roadway into a field where the Mercedes and tractor portion of the tractor trailer were engulfed in flames.

Mark Smith was unresponsive and trapped in the vehicle due to the severity of the impact. Kim Smith was able to exit the tractor trailer and made several unsuccessful attempts to rescue the man from the Mercedes, using an onboard fire extinguisher in an effort to extinguish the burning car, Fournier said.

Mark Smith remained trapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor trailer driver, Kim Smith, was properly restrained and not injured.

Route 24 between Maryland Camp Road and Hollyville Road was closed for about 4.5 hours.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident.
