Jean N. Conaway, wonderful homemaker

Jean N. Conaway, 83, of Lewes and formerly of Laurel, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at Beebe Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Harley Neal and Margaret Penuel Neal.

Jean had worked as a sales associate for the Laurel Variety store many years ago. She was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed cooking and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They will especially miss her delicious fudge and banana muffins. Jean loved to watch Wheel of Fortune, and taking trips to the Boardwalk to get Grotto's pizza and Dollies popcorn. She loved animals and had a special place in her heart for Garfield. She was a lifetime member of the Martha Rebekah’s Lodge in Laurel, the Grange, and was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and affiliate member of Conley’s United Methodist Church.

Jean is survived by her daughters; Sandra “Sandy” Shipe and her husband Bob of Lewes, and JoAnn Hammonds of Laurel; two brothers, James Neal and Howard Neal; grandchildren Jennifer Donnelly and her husband Chris, Regina Shelton and (Gary Williams), Roxanne Carey, Michael Shipe, Susie Shipe, (Darryll Turner), and Kristen Brooks and her husband Dave; great-grandchildren Haylee Cain, Danielle Cain, Joseph Shipe, Cheyanne Turner, and Delaney Brooks. Several nieces and nephews also survive her.

In addition to her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her loving husband Miles A. Conaway Sr. in 2007; her son Miles “Mickey” Conaway Jr., and her son-in-law Greg Hammonds.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Hannigan,Short, Disharoon Funeral Home 700 West St. Laurel. A viewing will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. There will be an addition viewing Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Mike Hurley and Pastor Bill Nack will be officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery Laurel.
