Harry M. Ballard, lifelong insurance agent

Harry M. Ballard, 67, of Lewes, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Beebe Healthcare, Lewes. He was born in Baltimore, Md. July 8, 1946, son of the late Maurice L. and Vina E. (Eubanks) Ballard.

Formerly of Woodlawn, Md., Mr. Ballard has resided in Lewes for the past 19 years. He was a member of the United States military, proudly serving in the Army 1965-67. In addition to his service to our country, Mr. Ballard enjoyed a lifelong career as an insurance agent with Sun Life Insurance Company. Aside from his career, he was a dedicated supporter of local AA organizations in both Woodlawn and Lewes, where he would take the time to mentor his fellow participants. Mr. Ballard was also a devoted member of the Woodlawn American Legion and Knights of Columbus. Mr. Ballard was an active parishioner of St. Lawrence Catholic Church when he still resided in Woodlawn. Deer hunting, fishing, and traveling were just a few of his favorite past times that he enjoyed with his friends and family. Known for his humorous quick wit and boisterous jokes, Mr. Ballard’s personality will not be forgotten by all those who loved him.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Ballard was preceded in death by his brother, Ed Ballard; his three sisters: Anne Harris, Louise Ballard and June Crisp, and one grandson, David Kelly. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Arlene Kay (Nieberlein) Ballard; son Jay Ballard and his wife Ali of Bel Air, Md.; daughter Kelly Norman and her husband Sam of Baltimore, Md.; his eight grandchildren: Heather Black, Jenna Ballard, Regina Wehr, John Nieberlein, Carly Ballard, Jackie Nieberlein, Denise Lochard and Kayla Lochard; and two great-grandchildren, Bruce and Timothy Greenfield.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Friends may also call at the funeral home Thursday, Jan. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment with military honors will follow the funeral service Jan. 17 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Southern Delaware Intergroup, P. O. Box 1080, Millsboro, DE 19966.
