Clifford P. Meyer, passion for shipbuilding

Clifford P. Meyer, 74, of Georgetown, and formerly of Wakefield, R.I., died at home surrounded by family Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014.

Born in Queens, N.Y. to the Rev. Clifford G. and Mildred Meyer, Cliff was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was active in his church congregation, the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach, and prior to that St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Charlestown, R.I. He was an avid collector/trader of U.S. Naval covers as a member of the Universal Ship Cancellation Society.

Cliff had a passion for sailing, shipbuilding and the ocean. Cliff worked his entire career for the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics.

Cliff earned a degree in marine engineering and naval architecture from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in Glen Cove, N.Y., where he also earned varsity letters in basketball. He graduated at age 16 from Northport High School and played basketball for St. Paul's Lutheran Church, East Northport, N.Y., where his father was minister.

Cliff is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 51 years, Ann E.C. Meyer; children, Susan Meyer (Charles), Nancy Meyer Heiz (Andrew), Barbara Meyer Long (John); six grandchildren; brother, Gary; and sister, Mildred (Mimi).  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Keith Charles.

A memorial service to honor Cliff’s life will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at The Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Rehoboth Beach. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following that have special meaning to them: Delaware Hospice or CHEER Center (Sussex County Senior Services); or Webb Institute, Glen Cove, NY.
