Cape’s big bangers were in the hanger in the match versus defending state champion Saint Georges Tech that started at the 152-pound weight class. The Vikings led 24/7 all day long but the Great Adventure Exit 7 was coming up beginning at 106 and rolling through seven weight classes through 145.
Cape had led 24-3 the night before at Smyrna in a match begun at 145 and was outscored 29-0 in the final six weight classes to lose 32-24.
“We’re not bad in the light weights, just running into some teams that are incredibly tough there. I knew we’d have to win a match or two in the final seven,” said coach Chris Mattioni.
Cut to the chase: It was “Go, Diegos, Go” as Vinnie, 132, battled to a 14-8 decision over Tony Immediato. Entering the final bout, Cape trailed the Hawks 29-27. It was winner take all.
“I knew the match was on me, so I just went after it right from the start," said 145-pounder Nick Diego “I’m really happy to get a pin and a win for our team. That was really fun that my brother and I were able to come through when the team needed us.”
Cape's Justin Lopez, 170, got his second consecutive pin in two big matches. Nick Carroll dropped down to 220 and got a 5-0 victory.
Aaron Mattioni secured his 100th career win with an 18-second pin in the 195- pound weight class.
