The Town of Henlopen Acres has more teeth to its parking ordinance after town council unanimously approved fining parking offenders $50.
“We didn't have an ordinance that allowed for citations in areas that need permit,” said Thomas Roth, town manager of Henlopen Acres.
Council passed the measure 6-0 at its quarterly meeting Jan. 17. Winnie Kee was absent. The measure goes into effect immediately giving Henlopen Acres security the ability to issue a $50 ticket for a parking violation – an increase from the warning Henlopen Acres security previously issued, Roth said.
There was no discussion on the parking ordinance amendment. Mayor David Hill said, “There are not many places to park without getting a ticket.”
Roth said the marina and cul-de-sac at the end of East Street near the beach tend to have the most parking violators. Parking on property easements are permitted; parking on the street requires a permit, he said.
The town works with groups that hold planned events such as those held by the Rehoboth Art League, and the ordinance should have no affect on them, Roth said. The art league hires a parking attendant to help direct parking for their events, which helps immensely, he said.
“If someone is parking where they shouldn't, they'll tell them,” Roth said.
There has been no issue with parking at Rehoboth Art League events for several years, he said.
In other business, Hill said town officials will meet in February with Rehoboth Art League officials to discuss the art league's status.
